Carrington was born tongue tied (like me, I had it clipped when I was a freshman in HS – not fun) and had to have her tongue clipped today. Yvonne was scared for the baby but it ended up pretty smooth. Apparently the nerves in the tongue aren’t fully developed yet and it is not real sensative underneath. So they clipped her tongue and she didn’t cry at all when they clipped it…and then had a monster poopie when she was handed back to us (and Yvonne quickly says it must have scared the $@&#% out of her). That’s my girls.

For those who have been asking for all the labor and delivery details here goes…

I was definitely not expecting baby to arrive last Saturday. I had finally accepted the fact she hadn’t arrived by Halloween as thought and that I was going to be induced on Monday, November 10th. So, I was planning on sending Michael on last minute errands on Saturday and then enjoying a relaxing date night at home.

I woke up at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday with pain in my back and hips. By 4:30 I knew it was definitely not false labor anymore… which I’d been having on and off for the past two weeks! From 4:30 to 7:00 I walked around the house, took a shower, sat on the exercise ball and tried the silly breathing techniques. I called the doctor at 7:00 with contractions 5 minutes apart lasting 45 seconds. We arrived at the hospital by 8:00. Thankfully Michael drove the speed limit and stayed clear of any bumps on the way to the hospital (for those of you who have been a passenger in the car with him you understand this!).

DSC00120At the initial triage check-in, I was at 6 cm dilated, station 0 with contractions about 4 minutes apart lasting 50 seconds. By 10 a.m. I was 8 cm dilated, still waiting for my epidural. Definitely was feeling the contractions at this point since I had no medication. However, I didn’t want any other drugs because I wanted to be alert when the baby was born.

DSC00129When the anesthesiologist came in to administer the epidural, I knew it was a 50/50 chance if the epidural would even work. I have fused discs in my lower spine and the anesthesiologist said he’d give it a try. After scraping bone twice (yes twice!), he finally got the epidural in and it worked (thank goodness!). Within 20 minutes I was very happy, feeling nothing from the waist down and now 9 cm dilated. The doctor then broke my waters. There was merconium in the waters, so NICU was on standby just in case Carrington aspirated the merconium. By 1:00 I was a full 10 cm dilated.

DSC00175The doctor had me wait until 1:30 to begin pushing to allow the epidural to wear off some so I could push stronger. After 2 hours of pushing, Carrington was born! She was completely tangled in the umbilical cord, so that’s the reason it took 2 hours of pushing. Thankfully, she did not swallow the merconium. I did have a small episiotomy… at least I didn’t have to have a c-section and then have to deal with that during recovery.

Looking back, the worst part of labor was experiencing the contractions without pain relief as long I did and getting the epidural (feeling the scraping of the bone was not fun… yet I will still get an epidural if I have another baby!). The labor and delivery nurses at Riverside are amazing and Carrington’s birthday was beautiful and wonderful in every way.

Well the time has come. Hallelujah! Yvonne woke up at 3:30AM with contractions and we came over to the hospital around 8. She was already 6cm! She decided to get an epidural and is doing great. I’m so proud of her. Thoughts and prayers appreciated.

Pictures to follow in abundance once I get the laptop at the hospital.

Current Labor Specs: 4CM, fully effaced. Baby has dropped to station 0.

No baby yet! We had a doctor appointment this morning. I’m now 4 centimeters dilated and baby Carrington has dropped to station 0. Dr. Paul said there’s a 50/50 chance she’ll arrive this weekend (I hope so!). If not, I’m scheduled for an induction bright and early Monday morning.

In the meantime, I’m SOOOO bored! Being used to working on deadline, this sitting around and waiting is driving me nuts! I’ve done lots of walking, cleaned the house over and over, watched old ’80s movies… but time is moving so slow! Everyone keeps telling me to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet while I can.

So, for all of you who keep calling and texting for an update, baby Carrington will make her grand entrance on Monday at the latest. And no, we won’t forget to let you know if I go into labor sooner!

Current Labor Specs: Still 3+CM, fully effaced now. Baby has dropped to station -2.

We had another appointment today. Dr. Paul said Yvonne’s cervix is “fulled ripened” and we are just waiting “for the engine to move into 1st gear.” As you have already noticed there was not a big change in the labor specs other than the baby has dropped into the pelvic area (station -2).  In case any of you are wondering, the baby’s “station” is his position in the pelvis, and is measured in numbers from -4 (just entering the pelvis) to +4 (ready to be born). Station 0 is when stuff really starts to move quickly – it is called engagement and the baby’s head is crowning.

Dr. Paul also said that she thinks Yvonne will last until November – and set an induction date (if she goes that far) of Monday, November 9th. So now at least we know at the very latest we will bring our baby into the world in a week-and-a-half (tops). I think Yvonne is still impatient – yesterday she walked up and down the stairs all day trying to walk the baby out. She keeps talking about how Indian women (feathers) walked around and popped out babies then went back to everyday life.  I’m not sure if that is a real stereotype or just idealistic.

We met up with “Grandma and Grandpa” (my parents) and “Aunt” Michelle at Bob Evans for some delicious breakfast/brunch after the appointment. I’d list all the food we ate but lets just say they served my father and me on multiple plates (we love breakfast food).

To sum up the day everyone was impatient and anxious before the appointment – now waiting and wanting to get the baby in our arms ASAP.

Current Labor Specs: 3CM, 85% Effaced

For the past 2 weeks Yvonne has taken it upon herself to try to work the baby out. Utilizing various exercise techniques and advanced ancient wives tales (stretching / walking the dog / cooking), she is trying to stay as busy as possible and move enough to work the baby out. We are very blessed and excited about this gift from God and can’t wait to get to the finish line and start posting some pictures :P

The good news is that all the baby gear and the nursery furniture is installed and in place… I think my to-do list (remind me to post that to-do list in a later reflection) is pretty much wrapped up. Now we are just waiting for Carrington to get here!

We have another appointment tomorrow (10/29) – last appointment they talked about possibly inducing sooner rather than later – we are 38 weeks along, but the baby has consistently measured 2-3 weeks further along – so we will see what happens. Technical due date is 11/10, but doctor said to expect baby by Halloween. Maybe we’ll have our baby girl to hold next week! Keep  us in your thoughts and prayers – we promise to share the joy :)
